There are numerous differences that separate Nietzsche and Artaud, as well as an undeniable kinship that links them together. This paper does not search for direct influence of one’s work on the other’s, but nonetheless compares these two authors on the basis of the notion of thought as a cruel task that strips man of his illusions. This comparison is developed firstly by pointing out to the thinkers’ shared characterization of life as cruelty and secondly by drawing a parallel between their conceptions of drama as depicted in The Birth of Tragedy and The Theater and Its Double. Ultimately, the main elements these thinkers have in common are their deconstrucitve approaches to language, subject, and body.

El adulterio de Zaratustra

This paper analyses the three songs featured in the second part of Thus Spoke Zarathustra – “The Night Song”, “The Dancing Song”, and “The Tomb Song” – as a means to explore Zarathustra’s complex relationship with life and wisdom. It presents Zarathustra’s passionate option for life, which is conveyed allegorically in the songs, as an act of adultery committed against wisdom that will ultimately lead Zarathustra to the discovery of life as will to power. But in the context of this new direction which Zarathustra undertakes as a result of his adultery, wisdom is no longer opposed to life.

This paper contends that Deleuze’s interpretations of Nietzsche and Spinoza are each influenced by his reading of the other philosopher. This contention is explored through the main issues of the body and the will to power. While concerning the body Deleuze’s reading of Spinoza is tinted by Nietzsche, in his reading of the will to power it is rather Spinoza that filters his reading of Nietzsche. Ultimately it can be said that Deleuze’s way of reading Nietzsche in dialogue with Spinoza obeys an ontology of potency.

In the first place, this paper reviews Nietzsche’s criticism of Romanticism and the famous antinomy between “Classical” and “Romantic” that is based on the opposition between Bizet and Wagner; in the second place, it asks how Bizet’s music, which cured Nietzsche from the lies and the brutality of Wagnerian style, embodies the Classical style that Nietzsche praises as opposed to Romantic illness. Finally, it turns to the most bewitched opera, in order to find in Nietzsche’s description of Carmen’s character a configuration of the female figure that allows one to think about the relationship between music and philosophy or, better still, between music and philosopher.

This paper will outline some points of contact between music and language in Nietzsche, using as a key perspective the nonsignificance of music, and its consequences for Nietzschean critics of language. We will try to highlight how some characteristics of music as featured in The Birth of Tragedy reappear at different moments in his work, and generate at once criticism and construction of new perspectives on language and subjectivity. Taking this into account, and although Nietzsche’s preferred musical works change throughout his life, we will show that these variations have conceptual continuity, not only in terms of musical thought, but also regarding language and figures of subjectivity.

In Nietzsche’s early writings, the idea of a rebirth of the tragedy in Germany is one of the main issues that connect the aesthetic and political thoughts of the young philosopher. This rebirth promises not only a new era of profound artistic productivity, but also the constitution of a people oriented toward art. This paper tackles the strains that emerge when Nietzsche has to put his aesthetical hope for a rebirth and the political conditions of such an event together. In particular he has to solve the problem of how to turn an anti-artistic subject such as the mass into an artistically-oriented people. Although he found in the genius the one that can produce that transformation, the internal strains and paradoxes of this figure configure an account of the rebirth as an event toward which the only possible attitude is to wait.

El estructuralismo: ¿una destitución del sujeto?

In order to establish that structuralism is the moment that marks French philosophy in the second half of the XX century, the author arguments: a) that structuralism must be inscribed in the field of philosophy, even if some of the names that are related to this movement are non-philosophers, for philosophy is defined for its incorporation of that which seems strange to it; b) that what is considered as post-structuralism is already present in structuralism since its very beginning.

In this paper, the author claims that radical political inmanentism, such as Deleuze’s and Spinoza’s in Deleuze’s reading, is not compatible with the project of vanguardism that authors as Negri, Hardt or Virilio, among others, have tried to justify departing from Deleuze. The author discusses the legitimacy of those readings and concludes that it is possible and much more plausible to think politics from a Deleuzian perspective as a project capable of legitimating a Maquiavelian democratic State.

Is there a Deleuzian aesthetics? This question is today the name of a debate perhaps opened by Jacques Rancière. In the present article we will not try to respond to it by yes or no, but to reveal the conditions of the problem and its solution. Is art an independent activity with no connection to other activities in Deleuze’s philosophy or is it inseparably linked with other spheres? Is the philosophical approach a discourse about art or an artistic discourse itself? These are the real questions we will intend to solve.

The current work aims to show how philosophy can be conceived as an agonizing and endless experience of thinking that allows a positive appropriation of the past, that is to say of our rich and open philosophical tradition. Through the untimely thinking of Nietzsche, Heidegger’s Destruktion and Derrida’s deconstruction, I will try to establish the way in which philosophy opens itself, by a recreation of the past, to an unknown and potentially unlimited future of meanings, concepts and new ways of thinking.
